Hammond is the oldest city in Lake County, in the Chicago metro area. Hammond is a city in Lake County, in the Chicago metro area. The community was named after a Detroit butcher George H. Hammond who founded a meat-packing plant in the city.
Around 1847, German farmers, the first permanent residents began to settle at the area between the Grand River and Little Calumet Rivers. This area soon developed and came to be known as Hammond.
